When my 80-year-old two-storey Californian bungalow-style house in Auckland’s inner city needed repainting, I employed BG Projects to manage the work and identify and rectify any rotting timbers or other aspects of deterioration before the painting began. Unfortunately, this turned into a much larger project than anticipated as it became apparent that some historic alterations (perhaps 40 or 50 years earlier) and some plumbing had not been up to standard, causing quite substantial deterioration. In those circumstances it was not possible to quote for the job, as the surprises kept on coming!
Eventually the back two corners of the house and much of the seaward side had to be rebuilt. Nick and his team were extremely thorough, and I knew I could rely on their honesty and an excellent standard of workmanship. Nick checked all work and I felt confident that no building shortcuts were taken. This was extremely important in a situation where a finite quote was just not possible. All costs were shown very clearly on a spreadsheet with invoices attached. BG Project’s margin was also clearly identified. I am confident that the house is now extremely solid, and although financially the job evolved into a far bigger exercise than anticipated – a rebuilding project rather than simply a painting and repair project – I am extremely pleased with the approach of BG Projects and their team. In an uncertain situation such as I experienced, with original budgets and timing no longer valid, it was important to be able to trust the company and the people handling the project.
